Learning about SENTINEL 4, 5 and 5P

By Jessica Huntingford 8 years ago

Following up on last week’s post for us non-experts…some more details about the SENTINEL satellite missions that AURORA deals with.

Sentinel-4 and Sentinel-5 will be carried on meteorological satellites. They will help us to monitor the composition of the Earth’s atmosphere. Why is this important? Because it is about the air that we breathe, the UV radiation that humans, plants and animals absorb, about climate and weather conditions….More information and examples are available on the ESA website.

Sentinel-4 and -5 are not yet up and running, but a Sentinel-5 Precursor mission is being developed to reduce data gaps between current missions and the launch of Sentinel-5. It should be launched before the end of 2016. Have a look at the Flyby animation and the Technical view animation.
